Voluntary Code of Conduct

In 2010 a voluntary code of conduct was launched with bait diggers and other recreational users of the mudflats on the Stour and Orwell estuaries. This was the outcome of meetings between conservationists, regulators, landowners, bait diggers and recreational users in Suffolk under the banner of the Stour and Orwell Estuaries Management Group.

The code of conduct aims to raise awareness of disturbance issues and encourage more sustainable use of the estuaries. The code includes the voluntary closure of specific areas of mudflats between 1st November and 30th April each year. It provides clear guidance for users, enabling them to act responsibly and play their part in protecting and conserving these unique habitats.
