The tiny hamlet of Shingle Street lies at the point where the River Ore meets the sea. One of the more remote corners of the AONB, Shingle Street has a large, windswept beach, parts of which are regularly re-shaped and sculpted by the sea. Other, more stable areas support rich and important plants communities, including sea kale, sea pea and sea campion. Much of the area is protected as an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). The beach at Shingle Street is unsuitable for bathing owing to the strong currents found here.
