Book your 2017 Conservation Holiday

2016 saw the first ever conservation holidays take place on the Suffolk Coast, and in 2017 Wild Days Conservation will be returning with two fantastic holidays on offer.

The holidays are ideal for couples, groups of friends and singles looking for a completely unique holiday experience and the opportunity to make a real difference to the outstanding landscape of the Suffolk Coast & Heaths.

During your holiday, you have the chance to get up close to our rare wildlife and birdlife, learn new skills and contribute to the conservation work that protects this beautiful coastline.

Taking place in September, the holidays are available for a limited number of people, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Suffolk Coast Rare Habitats and Wildlife – 10th – 16th September 2017
During this week long conservation holiday, you will stay in the beautiful surroundings of Chantry Barn in the centre of Orford. Working with both the National Trust and RSPB, you will travel by boat each morning to Orford Ness where you will have the chance to survey the native species and encounter rare birds, wildlife and vegetation such as sea lavender, sea aster, peregrines and oyster catchers.

In addition to supporting the work of the Marine Conservation Society, you will get the chance to roll up your sleeves and cut back invasive gorse that is forcing visitors off the coastal path and on to protected shingle areas.

After two days here, you will move on to Suffolk’s only island, RSPB Havergate Island and Snape Warren, where you will collect and analyse mud samples in the shallow lagoons to help scientists monitor the quality of habitats, and collect data to support the work of The Mammal Society.

Finishing the week at Snape Warren, there’s another opportunity to get stuck in; clearing birch trees and at night or dawn, heading out with light traps, bat detectors and binoculars to encounter our the nocturnal inhabitants.

Suffolk Coast – Dunwich and Minsmere – 24th – 30th September 2017
Working at the RSPB’s flagship reserve at Minsmere, this conservation holiday is a truly unique experience. Situated on the edge of the coastal village of Dunwich, Bridge Barn will be your home for the week. During your holiday, you will spend evenings relaxing in the tranquil surroundings of the barn, and head out to some of the Suffolk Coast’s best-loved pubs for some local fayre!

Your work will take place on the reserve; helping to clear the scrub on the heath and observing the spectacular Red Deer Rut. One of nature’s most magnificent spectacles!

You will then head to the beach at National Trust’s Dunwich Heath to help with fencing and coppicing, plus surveying the small animals and mammals that inhabit the area.
