Walking in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths
This section of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths website contains information about walking in the AONB.
The Suffolk Coast and Heaths is a fantastic place to explore on foot. It's simply impossible to get more than a fleeting taste of the AONB from a car and walking is probably the best way to experience everything the AONB has to offer. There are routes suitable for all levels of interest and ability, so whether you're a serious long distance walker or just fancy a short stroll in some beautiful countryside, there's bound to be something suitable.
The AONB has an excellent network of footpaths and bridleways, large areas of Open Access land, three long distance routes, varied terrain and a wealth of interest along the way.
Planning your walk
A good map is essential for anyone considering any serious walking. Ordnance Survey produce two ranges of maps that are useful for walkers, the Landranger series and the Explorer series. The Suffolk Coast and Heaths is included on the following maps:
Landranger 1:50,000 series (red cover): sheets 156 and 169
Explorer 1:25,000 series (orange cover): sheets 231, 212 and 197
The maps show all the current Rights of Way, and include long distance routes in the area. They also include information about Open Access land.
The Suffolk Coast and Heaths Unit produces three guides to the long distance trails in the AONB, the Stour and Orwell Walk, the Sandlings Walk and the Suffolk Coast Path, sorry all currently out of print. Please see the link from this page for more details. The guides are available from local outlets and can also be ordered direct from the Unit. Please see our publications page for more details on ordering.
Please be aware that footpaths and other rights of way, particularly close to the coast and estuaries, may be subject to temporary restrictions or closure. This is more likely to occur in the winter when erosion and flooding incidents may happen with little or no warning.
