Woodland

Rows of conifers

Woodland covers a total of 6,352 hectares or just over 15% of the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape. Of this woodland, 47% is coniferous and 45% is broadleaved.

Other woodland types include mixed woodland, felled woodland, young trees, ground prepared for planting, coppice and shrub land.

Coniferous woodland tends to be located in within large plantations, including Rendlesham Forest, Tunstall Forest and Dunwich Forest.

Conversely, broadleaved woodland tends to occur in much smaller blocks scattered throughout the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape.

Ancient and semi-natural woodland covers 1% of land within the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape. There are some larger blocks of ancient woodland located in around the eastern edge of Rendlesham Forest including Staverton Park, Walter Wood, Oak Wood and Carmens Wood.
